American Legion News – May 6th Meeting

At the regular meeting of Ernest Peterson Post 228, held on May 6th, 2010, the following actions and reports were acted upon or presented: Post membership consists of 17 life members, 11 active duty members that the Post pays their dues until they leave active duty, 2 transfers, 4 new members and 92 regular members totaling 126 members. The “Honor Guard” conducted funeral services for Lawrence Kowalski, Harmon Grubbs, Lyle Blanshan and “Veteran of the Month” ceremonies for John Richard Homady and Richard Harold Brannon. The Boyne City Gazette, Petoskey News Review and Charlevoix Courier published “Veteran of the Month” John Richard Homady and The Gazette and News Review published The Boyne City Legion News. Bingo continues to pay the bills and the State no-smoking law has increased attendance with many new players. The Chaplain reported on veterans who are sick disabled, shut-in or have answered the final call and that there are 12 veterans in Grandvue Medical Care Facility. Also, shut-in member Jim Wicker could use more visitors. The Post election of officers was held as follows: The Nominating Committee reported one candidate for each office as follows: Commander-Donald Kleinschrodt, Adjutant-John Mathers, Sr. Vice Commander-Joe Gerant, Jr. Vice Commander-Elwood Austin, Finance Officer-Marvin Potter, Service Officer-Raymond Speltz, Judge Advocate- Peter Vellenga, Chaplain-Art Cosier, Historian-Brian Morrison, Sgt-At-Arms-Fred Leyh, Trustee 1 year-Gerald Evans, Trustee 2 years-Brian Morrison, Trustee 3 years-Art Cosier. Following a call three times for additional nominations by the Commander, it was moved, supported and passed that the nominations be closed and the Adjutant be instructed to cast one unanimous ballot, representing the voting strength of the Post, for the candidates presented by the Nominating Committee. Fred Leyh reported that he had presented the $100 donation from the Post to the Boyne Area Free Clinic that they were happy to receive. It was reported that the area health inspector had inspected the Post stating we must have a food manager to be certified by attending a school to be held Sept.6th, 2010 at our Post. It was moved, supported and passed to donate $100 to the Lutheran Church youth group for allowing us to use the parsonage property to conduct the Fred Gondzar estate yard sale.

Blue Star Banners, for display in windows by relatives of active duty soldiers, are available at the Post on Saturdays 3-9 pm. The next regular meeting will be held June 3rd, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the Post home and will be preceded by the “Veteran of the Month” ceremonies at 6:15 pm to be followed by a potluck supper in their honor. Area Veterans, with their families, are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

    Glad to see all the good work and actiity at my first American Legion Post :) Living in Virginia, me and my wife Mary (Legion Member too) are doing well in Virginia at Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284.
