As the bright red sign for what has for years been Boyne City’s Dairy Queen went from its high signpost to the ground one night, much of Boyne’s population wondered what was happening. The thought of losing the long-remembered and long-enjoyed business was drastic to some, and they began questioning. The ice cream lovers can rest well, however, because all is not lost. “We are going to have cakes, ice cream, and banana splits.” said owner Dave Korthase. “We just won’t have the Dairy Queen logo.” The change came about when Korthase found himself at a crossroads where the new contract came up with widespread franchise Dairy Queen. “We had to change in order to stay the same. Had we stayed with Dairy Queen, we could not supply the menu that people have become accustomed to.” added Korthase, then going on to specify that some of the baskets and menu items would have had to go with the new contract. While the new name is still up in the air, the new store plans to open up as done as years past during the second week of February. Along with the possibility of expanding the menu, Korthase also added that a concrete patio might be in the future, with a grand opening conceived for the late-spring/early-summer. Korthase went on to day that he is still open to any ideas and suggestions, especially when it comes to naming the new business.

UPDATE

In response to patience and curiousity from the people of Boyne City, Dave and Betty Korthase are happy to say that plans are going smoothly for the new restaurant. After recently choosing to disengage from the Dairy Queen franchise that they had known for over twenty years, a new name has been selected: Parkside Grill and Treats. “We just felt that it kind of fit everything.” said Betty Korthase, reflecting on the new name. With the new company name comes the exciting change that the frozen ice cream treats we once knew as the popular Blizzards will now be called “White Outs.” After years of operating under the Dairy Queen name, adjustments will come slowly, but all Dairy Queen items must be removed before the store opens. A new sign design is in process, due to the sign ordinance conflicting with the well-known pole-sign. The food items are set to remain the same. “As Dave said, most everything will be the same, just a different name.” finished Betty. Parkside Grill and Treats plans on opening in the beginning of February, on schedule, and the outside area is intended to be finished at that time.
