Will you run for BCPS Board of Ed?


There will be three members elected to the Board of Education for full terms of six years ending in 2026 and one member for a partial 4-year term ending in 2024.
Only one member, Jeff Mercer, has announced he will run again for another 6-year term.
“Having a strong Board of Education is the cornerstone of any successful school system,” said Boyne City Public Schools Superintendent Pat Little. “I encourage citizens to consider serving the Boyne community by running for the board. Primarily, the Board’s function is to provide high-level guidance to the superintendent, who in turn leads and manages the district with the support of the administrative team, and all staff.”
He added, “Members are also two-way communicators: communicating to the district leadership team and to the community when appropriate. The Board finalizes the budget each year, reviews and approves policies, and evaluates the Superintendent when required to do so.”

The following Board members who have seats up for election are:
• President Ken Shrader (6-year term) will not seek reelection after 19 years serving the community on the Board of Education.
• Treasurer Ross McLane (6-year term) will not seek reelection after 15 years serving the community on the Board of Education.
• Vice-President Jeff Mercer (6-year term) will seek reelection after 10 years of service.
• Appointed Board Member Nathan Minnaar (4-year term) will not seek reelection after 2 years of service.

Guidelines to become a Board member:
A school board member must be, on the date of the election, a U.S. citizen; at least 18 years of age; a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days; a resident of the school district on or before the 30th day prior to the date of the election and a registered voter in the school district where he or she is a candidate.

There are three forms to fill out in order to run for school board:
1. Nominating Petition (candidates have the option of paying a nonrefundable filing fee of $100),
2. Statement of Organization, and
3. Affidavit of Identity
All forms must be filed by the deadline of July 21, no later than 4 p.m. at the Charlevoix County Clerk’s Office.

Nathan Minnaar was appointed by the Board to fill Chris Marlin’s seat for a few years until the next election and has done a stellar job jumping into this unpredicted role.
