The children of Dolores Busse Wehrenberg wish to inform you of her passing on February 10, 2020.
She was born on February 18, 1922 to Henry and Selma Busse of Kankakee, Illinois. She led a loving and fulfilling life centered on faith, family and service to community and friends.
Dolores was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kankakee. She continued her faith journey at Valparaiso University, a Lutheran affiliated school, graduating in 1943. Active in the university community, she served as the first female editor of the Torch, the university newspaper. It was there she met and married Frederick H. Wehrenberg, Jr. (deceased). During WWII Dolores established and served as the sole teacher at the Malden Airfield Base Elementary School of the United States Army Air Force in Malden, Missouri where Fred was stationed. After the war, they settled in Fort Wayne where Dolores taught for many years at Holy Cross Lutheran School. After retirement in 1978 Dolores and Fred accepted a lay-missionary position with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America as the Hospital Administrators of Curran Lutheran Hospital in Zor-Zor, Liberia, a village of 600 huts in a tropical rain forest about 80 miles, a day’s drive, from Monrovia. After seven years they returned to the United States where they established their permanent residence in Walloon Lake, Michigan. Since that time she has been an active member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Petoskey, MI.
Dolores is the mother of six children; Laura (Thomas Reck, deceased), Frederick III (Jennie LeGates), William (Jane), Martha (Stuart Sweet, deceased), James (partner Karen Moore), and Michael (Jeannine). She was extremely proud of the accomplishments and success of each one. She is also survived by three grandchildren (Elowyn, Frederick IV, and Michael II), three great-grandchildren (Maxwell, Sloan and Quinn Dolores). She has one surviving sister, Connie Ashline.
Dolores has been active throughout her life in community service. She served as President of the Crocked Tree District Library during the years that funding and then construction of the new Walloon Lake Branch Library was accomplished. She served on the Melrose Township Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals for many years. She volunteered for more than 30 years at Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for Charlevoix & Emmet Counties. In addition, she served on its Advisory Board for many years. Dolores also held leadership responsibilities at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church as well as years of service providing medical and education care for the residents of Zor Zor, Liberia.
Dolores led a life that serves as an example to all.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 11:00 AM at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, 1450 E. Mitchell St., Petoskey, MI. The family will be hosting a reception immediately following the service at Stafford’s Perry Hotel, 100 Lewis St, Petoskey. Interment will be in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
