On Sunday, January 19, 2020 at approximately 6:30 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were called to M-115 near 46 RD in Clam Lake Township for a report of two vehicles damaged by a low hanging power line.
The fire department was on scene blocking the roadway and Consumers Energy turned off power to the line.
The drivers of both vehicles reported a person plowing his driveway near the scene.
Troopers observed tire tracks in the snow leading to the pole.
It was determined the truck plowing the driveway had struck the grounding rod on the pole causing the wires to sag.
The truck was parked at the residence near the pole.
The driver was identified as 67-year-old James Daniel Thomas of Cadillac.
Thomas displayed signs of intoxication. He stated he must have struck the pole while plowing. Thomas refused sobriety tests and was arrested for operating while intoxicated.
He was transported to Cadillac Munson Hospital for a blood draw and lodged in the Wexford County Jail.
Thomas was arraigned in the 84th District Court in Cadillac for one count felony OWI Third Offense, a felony punishable by 1-5 years and a fine of $500.00 to $5,000.00. He was released on a $10,000.00 cash surety bond. His next scheduled court date is January 28, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.
