On June 21, 2019 at approximately 10:30 am, the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office responded to a four vehicle accident on US-131 near Clarion Road in Melrose Township.
The crash started with two passenger cars that were traveling south on US 131.
The first passenger car driven by Shannon Jacobs, age 25 from Alanson, was stopped on US 131 turning left into the Clarion gas station and the second vehicle driven by Clayton Shelly, age 25 from Gwinn, did not see Jacobs’s vehicle stop and drove into the rear end of Jacobs’s vehicle.
Shelly’s car then came to a stop in the north bound lane.
An SUV driven by Leah Martin, age 38 from Mancelona, was traveling north on US 131 and rapidly stopped her vehicle to avoid hitting Shelly’s vehicle.
A motorcycle driven by Ronald Westcott, age 53 from Mancelona, then attempted to swerve into the south bound lane and hit the back passenger side of Martin’s vehicle.
Westcott was transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital by Emmet County EMS and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
All of the subjects involved in the accident were wearing their seatbelts, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor at this time. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
