Arrest in strangulation, home invasion case

On the afternoon of December 4, 2019, a trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post was dispatched to a report of a domestic assault that had occurred earlier in the day.

The victim alleged her ex-boyfriend had come to her residence in Grayling between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. that day to pick-up a cell phone.

When he came over, she told him that she would remove her personal information from the phone and place it in his mailbox.

She then asked him to leave and began to close the door.

At this time, he forced his was inside, knocked the phone from her hand and began to strangle her.

The phone broke when it hit the floor and the ex-boyfriend kicked it outside and left.

The suspect, 27-year-old Joseph Henry Somero of Grayling, was located, interviewed and subsequently arrested for the alleged assault.

Somero was lodged in the Crawford County Jail.

He is charged with one count Assault with Intent to do great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation, punishable by 10 years or $5,000.00; and one count Home Invasion Third Degree, a felony punishable by five years; and count Domestic Violence, a misdemeanor punishable by 93 days and/or $500.00.
Somero was arraigned in the 46th District Court in Crawford County. His bond was set at $5,000.00 10% cash surety.
