Detectives from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were asked to investigate an attempted suicide by a suspect who shot himself while detectives from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve a felony arrest warrant for his arrest.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. at The Village of Bay Ridge located off Silver Lake Road in Traverse City.
Two detectives came to the apartments to serve a felony arrest warrant for embezzlement on an employee of the complex.
Detectives contacted the suspect in a third-floor hallway.
The suspect, who had been previously interviewed by detectives, displayed a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at detectives.
Detectives took cover and ordered the man to drop the weapon.
The suspect ignored the commands and ran in the opposite direction down the hall and took a staircase leading outside to the parking lot.
The suspect ran to his vehicle that was located near a small garage. One of the detectives saw the suspect and again ordered him to drop the weapon. The detective was behind cover when the suspect shot himself in the head.
MSP detectives interviewed witnesses who confirmed there was one gunshot and the detectives did not discharge any rounds. The suspect, a 40-year-old Nathan Moore from Williamsburg, was taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. It has been confirmed Moore passed away as a result of the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
