St. Francis Xavier Boy Scout Troop 7 hosted the annual Northern Trails Klondike Derby at North Central Michigan College this past Saturday Feb. 13.
The College partnered with Troop 7 and many volunteers who braved the coldest day of winter to date to run a very successful event.
Over 100 Boy Scouts and Webelos Scouts participated from Petoskey, Cheboygan, Bellaire, Charlevoix, Gaylord, Alanson, East Jordan and Boyne City.
This year’s theme for the Klondike was Higher Learning, in which Scouts visited “campuses” to compete for “credits” by demonstrating different outdoor winter survival skills.
In addition, the Boy Scouts were able to work toward earning the BSA Scholarship Merit Badge.
College staff engaged the Boy Scouts to learn about the library and about career paths made possible by attending college.
Volunteers shared their college, vocational and military experiences.
The College also opened their Fab Lab to make specially-designed key chains with the Scouts to commemorate the event.
Troop 7 of Petoskey earned first place in the Boy Scout division and Pack 1 of Gaylord earned first place in the Webelos division.
