The staff at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Primary Care (formerly Pine River Medical Associates) is proud to welcome Benjamin J. Edwards, MD, and Chris A. Loewen, MD, to its growing medical staff.

“The need for additional primary care providers has been an ongoing challenge throughout northern Michigan,” said Lyn Jenks, Chief Executive Officer of Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital. “We are thrilled to add Dr. Edwards and Dr. Loewen to our growing medical staff and welcome them to Charlevoix. With our hospital and local clinics growing and expanding, we are proud to be able to continue to offer the high quality, compassionate health care that our patients expect and deserve.”

Dr. Benjamin Edwards is a graduate of Michigan State University.

He completed medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and residency at Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Having spent two years living in Traverse City while attending MSU’s College of Human Medicine, Dr. Edwards and his wife, Emily, fell in love with the northern Michigan.

They are excited to be making their home in Charlevoix, where Emily will begin teaching second grade at Charlevoix Elementary School.

Dr. Edwards finds northern Michigan to be a good fit for his love of fishing, hiking and bird watching and has enjoyed his first summer in Charlevoix.

Dr. Chris Loewen is a graduate of Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada, and completed his internship at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica.

Moving to Grand Rapids for his residency at Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners wasn’t his first introduction to Michigan, however.

His wife of eleven years, Cristina grew up in Traverse City where her family still resides.

Dr. and Mrs. Loewen and their two boys and two girls, ages 1, 3, 5 and 7, have made their new home just north of Charlevoix where Dr. Loewen looks forward to getting back to some of the hobbies he loves: carpentry, woodworking, automotive restoration, music, hiking and biking.

Both doctors say that what drew them to Charlevoix Hospital was the small town atmosphere within the framework of a larger health care system such as Munson Healthcare.

They believe that patients are able to benefit from access to a wider range of specialties than would normally be offered at a small hospital.

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Primary Care will be home to both Dr. Edwards and Dr. Loewen, who are taking new patients.

They are passionate about getting to know and care for the entire family, from babies to adults, men and women, and the ability to care for the family as a unit.

Helping families live healthy lives is something that inspires each of them and they are excited about joining an already thriving team of excellent providers.
