This week, Dr. Dan Benishek met with Nancy Schlichting, Chairperson of the Commission on Care, to discuss their final report on the Department of Veterans Affairs to Congress.

“The report makes it clear that the VA has enormous problems to solve and that we can’t solve them with more money alone. In order for veterans to receive the best possible care, we must take steps to bring the VA in line with the very best of private sector healthcare,” said Dr. Benishek.

“I was happy that the report addressed expanding choice for veterans, as I believe anyone who served their country should be able to choose where they’d like to receive the care they’ve earned,” added Dr. Benishek. “I also agree with the commission that VA needs strong and effective leadership that’s empowered to modernize the labyrinth of bureaucracy and hire the very best care providers.”

The Commission on Care was established by Congress in the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 and was charged with completing a strategic examination of the Veterans Health Administration while also providing recommendations on how best to reform veterans’ health care.

“Our veterans have suffered through an unaccountable, unresponsive, and unacceptable system for too long,” concluded Dr. Benishek. “I look forward to further studying the commission’s report thoroughly in the coming weeks and questioning the VA on their response in an upcoming House VA Committee hearing.”
