In response to the overwhelming need for mental health services in our local communities, Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital has opened its new Behavioral Health department.

Providers will see patients in both Charlevoix and Boyne City, making care as convenient as possible for all age groups.

Heading the department is long-time provider, Lori Katzman, MD, a graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. Joining her is Michael Lucido, PhD, Michalene Wright, Physician’s Office Clinical Coordinator, and Heather Elzinga, office coordinator. These providers have worked together for more than 15 years and have an extraordinary reputation in northwestern Michigan.

When asked why they chose to become part of Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital, Dr. Katzman indicated that they were very familiar with the quality of care and reputation for service that the hospital has and felt they were a good fit.

“Mental health issues are everywhere and there are very limited places in northern Michigan to go for help, particularly in our local area,” said Dr. Katzman. “I know this addition will fill a very significant need and be enormously helpful in our community.”

The team at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Behavioral Health will offer a comprehensive array of services to support the emotional and mental well-being of patients and their families. They are able to treat a wide range of psychiatric and mental health disorders such as depression, obsessive compulsive, post-traumatic stress, autism, ADHD, personality disorders, anxiety, panic, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, to name a few.

“Northwestern Michigan is a shortage area for mental health service providers, according to the HRSA research, indicating a great need in our local community. We are hoping to fill some of the gaps for people who either had no services or were driving across counties to get help,” said Dr. Lucido. “My hope is that we can make mental health as routine in our healthcare environment as any other medical service. Being a part of the hospital does just that.”
