In a Tuesday Sept. 27 meeting of the Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Board of Directors, hospital CEO Lyn Jenks officially announced her plans to retire. She said she will leave once a suitable replacement has been found.

According to a Wednesday Sept. 28 press release from the hospital, it is estimated that a search process will begin within the next few weeks … and may take up to six months to complete.

“This has not been an easy decision for me,” said Jenks. “It’s been a great personal honor to serve in this capacity and to support all the moving parts that make Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital a thriving, successful team.”

She added, “Together we have accomplished great things for our hospital, and I want the community to know how very proud I am to have worked with these professionals. It has been a real privilege.”

Persuaded by the hospital to come out of her previous retirement, Jenks began working for the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation in 2005 and was appointed CEO of the hospital on June 1, 2012.

“As long as I’ve known Lyn, she has been an unwavering champion for Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital,” said Ed Ness, President and CEO of Munson Healthcare. “Throughout the process of our initial partnership and then full integration, she has always effectively fostered constructive discussions and advanced a spirit of collaboration.”

He continued, “It is impossible to measure what Lyn has meant to Charlevoix Hospital these past years—she has clearly had an enormously positive impact. We will miss her wisdom and guidance, but we know that her decision to retire sets the stage for the great things that are in store for her in this next chapter of her life. We wholeheartedly wish her nothing but the best.”

Board members agree Jenks has been instrumental in helping to greatly improve the hospital’s financial condition and reputation in the community, turning around financial, strategic and operational performance.

Dr. Ruth Hoppe, former Chairperson of the hospital’s Board of Directors, had this reflection: “Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital has flourished under Lyn’s highly-engaged leadership. She has long understood that her most important role has been as a strategic thinker and nurturer of workers, whom she inspires and supports to make things better for patients. It is no accident that engagement surveys, from employees and from physicians, have been pace-setting during Lyn’s tenure as President. She has laid a wonderful foundation for keeping our hospital moving forward in today’s changing health care environment. “

In a letter to the hospital staff, Jenks pointed out that no success or failure in business can be attributed to a single individual.

“Working alone will never result in the kind of joy we have felt as we watched our work conclude in high patient, staff and physician satisfaction,” she stated. “Together, we have assured our hospital’s financial viability through efficient operation, successful recruitment of physicians and other important staff, service and facility initiatives.”

Jenks has received numerous awards over the years, and most recently was presented with the Award of Excellence in Administration by Healthcare Michigan.

And, according to the news release, she is well-loved by her staff and has maintained a transparent, open-door leadership style throughout her impactful tenure at the hospital.

In her retirement announcement, Jenks thanked the board members for their support, especially during the partnership and integration process with Munson Healthcare, ensuring the legacy of compassion and strength which has characterized health care in Charlevoix will continue.

Jenks plans to retire as soon as a new CEO is in place, and comfortable, in order to allow a smooth transition.

She intends to continue living in the area and spend her retirement time enjoying friends and family, traveling, and pursuing some of the service opportunities she is passionate about.

“I’m retiring because it feels like the right time,” Jenks said. “I had a unique opportunity to serve as CEO during what was a crossroads for our hospital. I am confident that the relationship with Munson Healthcare secures a solid future for the world-class healthcare and hometown caring that we have a history of providing.”
