Boyne Gazette College Sports Digest features Charlevoix’s Molly Jeakle, many more

MILESTONES
• Molly Jeakle (Charlevoix 2012) clinched ninth in the 3,000-meter run at the Big Ten Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a season-best time of 9 minutes, 32.1 seconds for the Michigan State University women’s program in a 12th-place finish among the field of 13 teams from Feb. 26-27 in Geneva, Ohio.

 

• Kayla Keane (East Jordan 2015) is a freshman at distance for No. 8 University of Michigan women’s indoor track and field program, which captured a title among the field at the Big Ten Conference Championships.
In her most recent effort, she ended 114th at the Greater Louisville Classic with a time of 18:14.5 for the Wolverines cross country program in a runner-up among the field of 21 teams on Oct. 3 in Louisville, Kentucky.

• Kylie Hicks (Boyne City 2014) is a sophomore at sprints for the NCAA Division II No. 5 Grand Valley State University women’s indoor track and field program, which secured a title among the field of 13 teams at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships from Feb. 27-28 in Tiffin, Ohio.
In her most recent performance, she placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (58.32 seconds) and with the 4×400-meter relay (3:59.14) at home in the GVSU Tune-Up on Feb. 19 in Allendale.

SPOTLIGHT
• Zach Hankins (Charlevoix 2014) posted his sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season at center for the Ferris State University men’s basketball program (23-9) in a 100-84 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championships Tournament against No. 12 Bellarmine University (23-7) by providing 14 points, seven rebounds and one block on March 12 in Somers, Wisconsin.
For the season, the sophomore’s compiled 4.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

• Caroline Boss (Charlevoix 2014) captured victory in the 800-meter run at the Polar Bear Final Qualifier and Multi with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 20.72 seconds for the Calvin College women’s indoor track and field program from March 4-5 in Ada, Ohio.
The meet was not scored.
In Boss’ most recent effort, the sophomore opened the outdoor track and field season by clinching ninth in the 1,500-meter run at the Birmingham-Southern College Invitational with a career-best time of 4:59.79 for the Knights in a sixth-place finish among the field 20 teams from March 11-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.

• Rainy McCune (Boyne City 2014) registered her sixth double-digit scoring effort of the season as a starting guard for the Schoolcraft College women’s basketball program (26-5) by producing 10 points and two rebounds in an 82-75 loss at Delta College (18-11) on Feb. 20 in University Center.
For the season, the freshman’s totaled 5.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
• Corey Redman (Boyne City 2015) hauled in one rebound at guard for Central Michigan University (17-15) in a 91-82 loss at home to Western Michigan University (13-18) on March 4 in Mount Pleasant.
For the season, the freshman’s totaled 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

• Jay Redman (Boyne City 2012) contributed four points and three rebounds at guard for Lawrence Tech University (6-24) in a 66-59 triumph at the University of Michigan at Dearborn (11-19) on Feb. 17 in Southfield.
For the season, the senior’s totaled two double-digit scoring performances complemented with 4.6 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

• Josh Puroll (Boyne Falls 2012) added six points and one rebound at forward for Lawrence Tech University against the Univeristy of Michigan at Dearborn.
For the season, the senior’s tallied 1.7 points per game.

MEN’S GOLF
• Chandler Novotny (Charlevoix 2014) is a redshirt freshman for Northwood University, which clinched a ninth-place finish among the field of 12 teams at the Coyote Classic from Feb. 22-23 in San Bernardino, California.

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
• Tevin Larmond (Boyne City 2013) is a junior at sprints for Spring Arbor University, which opens at the Polar Bear Invitational on March 24 in Marion, Indiana.
In his most recent effort, she placed ninth in the 200-meter dash (22.97 seconds) and 22nd in the 60-meter dash (7.24 seconds) at the Hillsdale College Wide Track Classic from Feb. 5-6 in Hillsdale.
The meet was not scored.

• Tristan Rudolph (Charlevoix 2014) is a sophomore at distance for Aquinas College, which opens at the Marian Invitational on April 1 in Indianapolis.
In the sophomore’s most recent performance, he clinched eighth in the mile at the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 4:34.89 for the Saints in a third-place finish among the field of six teams on Feb. 20 in Grand Rapids.

• Luke Hawley (East Jordan 2012) returns as a senior at distance for Aquinas College, bringing the resume of a four-time qualifier to the NAIA National Track and Field Championships and personal bests in the 600-meter run and 800-meter run of 1:24.01 and 1:55.81, respectively.

• Andrew Plude (Charlevoix 2012) is a senior at distance for Saginaw Valley State University, which opens at the Bellarmine Invitational on April 1 in Louisville, Kentucky.
In his most recent effort, he collected 19th in the 1,500-meter run at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 4:17.04.

• Nick Plude (Charlevoix 2015) is a freshman at distance for Saginaw Valley State University.

SOFTBALL
• Valorie Peters (East Jordan 2015) batted 2-for-3 in her first appearance at outfield for Lansing Community College (1-8) in a 3-0 loss at Wallace State Community College (19-17) on March 6 in Hanceville, Alabama.

• Paige Hornbeck (Boyne City 2015) finished 1-for-3 with one triple in her appearance at outfielder for Lansing Community College in a 7-2 loss at Columbia State Community College (8-7) on March 7 in Columbia, Tennessee.

WOMEN’S GOLF
• Paige Podskalny (East Jordan 2014) is a sophomore for Northwood University, which clinched a sixth-place finish among the field of eight teams at the Cougar Invitational from Feb. 29-March 1 in San Marcos, California.

WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
• Amber Way (Charlevoix 2015) is a freshman at distance for Michigan State University, which clinched a 12th-place finish among the field of 13 teams at the Big Ten Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships from Feb. 26-27 in Geneva, Ohio.
From March 25-26, the Spartans will open the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In Way’s most recent effort, she clinched the No. 7 performance at the NCAA Division I National Championships by placing 202nd on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:39.8 for the MSU women’s cross country program in a 13th-place finish among the field of 31 teams on Nov. 11, 2015.

• Kaleigh Beard (East Jordan 2012) is a senior at throws for Spring Arbor University, which opens at the Polar Bear Invitational on March 24 in Marion, Indiana.
In her most recent performance, she finished 17th in the shot put (23 feet, 6.25 inches), 19th in the discus (81-7.25) and 22nd in the hammer throw (98-1.5) at the 2015 Crossroads League Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
• Kirsten Malpass (East Jordan 2015) captured a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles and teamed with Laura Fernandez for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles for Lake Superior State University in a 9-0 sweep of Alma College on March 11 in Alma.
For the season, the freshman improved 3-8 overall in doubles action and 1-2 in singles play.
