Boyne elementary students collect over 2,100 books for reading project

Boyne City Elementary School has collaborated with the Great Start Parent Coalition to host a book drive for Great Start’s FreeCycle Book Project.

Boyne City Elementary Students collected more than 2,100 books during the school’s week-long book drive.

The FreeCycle Book Project’s purpose is to collect and distribute gently used books children’s to children across Charlevoix, Emmet and Northern Antrim counties. Currently there are 54 colorful book bins within these communities found at locations families and children frequent.

Each bin holds 50 books, ranging from infant board books to advanced chapter books. All books have a sticker on the cover that reads “This Book is FREE – Great Start FreeCycle.”

Boyne City Elementary School’s book drive was led by Great Start’s Community Liaison, Andrea Symonds and Boyne City Elementary Principal, Lisa King.

Symonds worked closely with Principal King in facilitating the book drive.

King has a passion for literacy and was eager to help support the FreeCycle Book Project. Boyne City Family Fare provided paper and plastic bags for the drive.

A flyer was attached to each bag explaining the book drive as well as the FreeCycle Book Project. Bags were sent home with each student, encouraging them to use the bag to bring their donated books back to their classroom.

The book drive was a school wide effort collecting a total of 2,138 children’s books. Sandy Thomason’s First grade class collected the most books with a total of 291 books. They were rewarded with an ice cream treat for their fantastic efforts.

“We are so thankful for all of the great books the Boyne City Elementary school donated. All of the students and staff were so enthusiastic about the drive. Principal Lisa King’s commitment to literacy and ongoing support is very much appreciated!” said Great Start Community Liaison, Andrea Symonds.
