Petoskey canoeist Stephen Brede will present “Going in Circles” 7 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 13, at the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society’s monthly program.
Brede recently completed a goal to paddle his canoe along the shoreline of all the Great Lakes.
He will talk about the logistics of his trips, the people and animals he met along the way, and what it’s like slowing down to 3 mph for months at a time.
His presentation will include a few of the thousands of photos he took on his voyage.
The program is free and open to the public, it begins at 7 PM at Northern Lights Recreation, 8865 M-119, Harbor Springs.
Brede moved to Petoskey in the late 1980s to work as a reporter at the Petoskey News-Review.
He went on to spend 10 years as a writer and photographer at Harbor House Publishers, in Boyne City.
In 2009 he quit his job and embarked on a series of summer paddles of each of the Great Lakes, beginning with Lake Huron.
He followed Huron with circuits of Lake Michigan in 2010, Lake Erie in 2012, and Lake Ontario in 2013.
He paddled the south shore of Lake Superior in 2014, and finished with the north shore this past summer.
The voyages taught him about self-reliance and the generosity of strangers, and instilled in him reverence for the lakes and concern for their future.
