College sporting news about Charlevoix County graduates

The Boyne City Gazette College Sports Digest is a unique, twice-monthly article highlighting the sporting endeavors of students who have graduated from the Charlevoix County area and who have gone on to play sports at the college level.

GEMS
• Jenna Way (Charlevoix 2013) delivered two of her best efforts of the season en route to leading NCAA Division II No. 4 Ferris State University volleyball program (13-1) to sweep Walsh University (4-9) and Malone University (5-10)
On Sept. 25, the junior setter contributed eight kills, six digs and one kill in a 3-0 triumph at WU in North Canton, Ohio.
On Sept. 25, she followed by clinching her second double-digit effort of the season in assists in a 3-0 victory at MU in Canton.
In her most recent effort, she followed by providing four digs and one dig in a 3-1 victory at home against NCAA Division II No. 22 Grand Valley State University (8-5) on Sept. 29 in Big Rapids.
For the season, she’s compiled 61 assists, 20 digs and two kills.

FOOTBALL
• Ben Walton (East Jordan 2014) is a 6-foot, 250-pound defensive lineman for Northwood University, which improved to 2-2 overall after clinching a 31-13 triumph at home against Wayne State University (2-2) on Sept. 26 in Midland.

• Kolbi Shumaker (Boyne City 2012) contributed a 22-yard punt return for Alma College (2-1) in a 42-21 victory at home against Rockford University (2-1) on Sept. 19 in Alma.
For the season, the senior defensive back has compiled 79 yards from seven returns complemented with seven tackles and one pass breakup.

• Tanner Catt (Charlevoix 2013) recorded one tackle in his first appearance of the season as a defensive back for Hope College (1-2) in a 48-13 triumph at home against Concordia University of Wisconsin (0-3) on Sept. 19 in Holland.

• Dustin Hejka (East Jordan 2014) is a 5-9, 150-pound wide receiver for Hope College.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
• Andrew Plude (Charlevoix 2013) posted the No. 12 performance for Saginaw Valley State University at the Spartan Invitational by finishing 299th on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 30 minutes, 28 seconds on Sept. 18 in East Lansing.
The meet was not scored.

• Nick Plude (Charlevoix 2015) is a freshman for Saginaw Valley State University.

• Luke Hawley (East Jordan 2012) is a senior for Aquinas College, which collected a fourth-place finish among the field of 24 teams at the National Catholic Invitational on Sept. 18 in South Bend, Indiana.
The junior did not compete.
For his career, he has competed in three NAIA track and field national championship meets.

• Gabe Hawley (East Jordan 2015) collected the No. 17 performance for NCAA Division III No. 16 Calvin College at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree by placing 47th on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:15.1 on Sept. 26 in Holland.
Among the field of 10 teams, the Saint ended eighth.

• Tristan Ruldoph (Charlevoix 2014) is a sophomore for Aquinas College.
In the sophomore’s most recent competition, he secured the No. 12 performance for the Saints at the Calvin Knight Invitational by ending 183rd with a time 28:03.
Among the field, the Saints collected eighth.

MEN’S GOLF
• Chandler Novotny (Charlevoix 2013) is a junior for Northwood University, which placed seventh at the at the Division II Midwest Fall Regional Invitational from Sept. 28-29 in Chicago.
He did not compete.

MEN’S SOCCER
• Nick Snabes (Charlevoix 2014) is a sophomore forward for Otterbein University, which improved to 5-3-1 overall after nabbing a 4-1 victory at Hiram College (5-3-2) on Sept. 30 in Hiram.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
• Molly Jeakle (Charlevoix 2012) captured the No. 8 performance for Michigan State University at the Spartan Invitational by placing 25th on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 22 minutes, 32 seconds on Sept. 18 in Lansing.
The meet was not scored.
Earlier in the season, she collected the No. 2 performance for MSU at the 30th annual Jeff Drenth Memorial Race by securing fifth on the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:29.88 on Sept. 4 in Mount Pleasant.
The meet was not scored.

VOLLEYBALL
• Erin Baker (Boyne City 2014) has recorded one assist through three matches as a defensive specialist for Concordia University, which improved to 15-8 overall after nabbing a 3-1 victory at home against the University of Michigan – Dearborn (5-14) on Sept. 30 in Ann Arbor.

WOMEN’S GOLF
• Paige Podskalny (East Jordan 2014) is a sophomore for Northwood University, which secured a sixth-place finish among the field of seven teams from Sept. 26-27 in Allendale.
The sophomore did not compete.
