If dogs in costumes, fun and games and contests for most and least obedient dogs sounds like fun, then Poochfest is for you!
On July 19, the Charlevoix Area Humane Society will host it’s ninth annual Poochfest, starting the day at 10 a.m. with the Parade of Paws—lasting until 2 p.m. with a variety of events during the day including: the Dachsie Derby, Hand-Me-Down-Hound Race, cat-a-pult, bobbing for balls, as well as a best vocal performance and of course a best costume contest.
“It’s a great celebration for the community and the animals and the people who care about them and the work the humane society does in promoting our mission,” said Scott MacKenzie, Executive Director of the Charlevoix Area Humane Society. “And, it’s just a fun time.”
Nine years ago, what would soon become Boyne’s beloved annual Poochfest, was a committee decision of the Humane Society as a new idea for fund-raising for the nonprofit organization.
“It was more about public awareness of the Charlevoix Area Humane Society and the work we do—it was about celebrating adoptions of dogs,” MacKenzie said.
Mackenzie mentioned this year there will be a demonstration of a dog pulling weights; explaining it would be the equivalent of a tractor pull.
The only restrictions on dogs are that they are people-friendly as well as dog-friendly.
“I really enjoy that it’s almost kind of like a reunion,” MacKenzie said. “We get to see a lot of the animals we adopted out and the folks that adopted them are always so proud to show them off.”
He added, “That brings up a lot of personal satisfaction to all the staff here. I get the biggest kick out of the least obedient dog contest.”
