Nestled alongside George Lasater's residence is the office for Up North Investigations

Jim Rockford or Thomas Magnum may not be able to help Charlevoix County residents with their private concerns but George T. Lasater of Up North Investigations is up to the task.  Lasater knows about investigations, too, with his 32 years of experience as Charlevoix County Sheriff.

“Since I stepped down from being sheriff I’ve missed the investigations and I think I have lots to offer to people,” Lasater said.

Up North Investigations specializes in many different aspects of investigation, including background investigations, personal security, cold case investigations, missing persons, inappropriate activity by public officials and insurance fraud.

The cost for an investigation, Lasater said, depends on the assignment and the individual.  “It is not a very expensive proposition,” he said. “I really enjoy helping people and this is another way to extend my helping hand … so money is not an issue.”

Lasater’s career in law enforcement began in the ’60s after he became a probation officer.  Later, he ran for sheriff and continued to do so eight consecutive times with successful four-year terms.   “I know lots of people in the county, so that’s a plus. And, I have the knowledge to do a good job,” he said.

People looking to hire Lasater will find he has a long history in Northern Michigan, where he has accomplished much – from volunteering to authoring books.

Two of his books detail Charlevoix County’s efforts in two major wars.  “The first one was about Charlevoix County’s contribution to World War II,” he said. “The second one, which is coming out this month, is about Charlevoix County’s contribution to World War I.”  Lasater added, “The third book is done and it details my life as a small county sheriff for 32 years.”

Lasater is also the director of the free clinic in Boyne City, and he sits on the committee for the Boyne City war memorial.  “The profits from the first book I contributed to the Boyne City, Charlevoix, Boyne Falls and Beaver Island war memorials,” he said.  Since opening four months ago, Lasater’s Up North Investigations has worked several cases.

“I can accomplish any task in the areas I feel comfortable investigating,” Lasater said. “People who come to me will enjoy my honesty and loyalty.”
