Through the generous sponsorship of Industrial Magnetics in Boyne City, I have had the opportunity to participate in Leadership Charlevoix County over the past several months.
This program, coordinated by the Boyne City, Charlevoix, and East Jordan Chambers of Commerce, was designed with the intention of putting the next generation of leaders in touch with the many different people and aspects of Charlevoix County, ranging from environmental services to connection with government.
This process began with a retreat to Beaver Island, and the opportunity to connect with island life.
We explored how services, business, and life in general differs when physically separated from the mainland, and even had the chance to tour the CMU Biological Station. We began the process of planning a large-scale community service project, something requiring individual effort on the part of all of us (almost 20) and have benefit to the larger community around us.
Over the next several sessions, we were educated by a variety of speakers, all with different and unique roles Charlevoix County.
They helped us to understand the workings behind the scenes, and see the future as it lies now.
We all had the opportunity to choose a mentor from a list as well.
The list contained successful businesspeople from all over the county who kindly volunteered to be a guiding force to one of the participants.
Jim Baumann from the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce agreed to be my mentor, a relationship which has been beneficial to my participation in the program.
So far, the program has been impressive, and I have learned far more than I thought possible about our area and its inner workings.
I also feel more prepared to take an even more active role on our community, using these leadership skills I have acquired to help better our area for the future.
As more sessions take place between now and May, I will share what I learn and what progress we make.
Just know that a group of people, all from different professions, each have made the future of Charlevoix County their priority, and have committed to making our area even better.
I thank you all for your support, especially Industrial Magnetics for their generous sponsorship.
