Daniel P. McCarthy, Jr., 59, died Monday, December 13th, in company of his family after a long illness. He was born May 22, 1951, to Mary (Moran) and Daniel Patrick McCarthy, Sr., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan.
A lifetime mechanic, he graduated from flashlights and his mother’s vacuum cleaner to automobiles and computers. If it was broken, Dan was our go-to guy. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed birding, hunting, fishing, morel hunting and most of all, the beauty of the northern Michigan wilderness. His greatest love was his children, for whom he delighted in preparing a holiday meal.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary, and brother Tim. Survivors include his father, Daniel Patrick McCarthy, Sr., of Lansing; sisters, Elizabeth McCarthy of Rochester Hills, Patricia McCarthy of Lansing, and Bridget McCarthy of San Francisco; daughters Ashley Hand of Petoskey and Amber Otero of Pellston; sons, Joseph McCarthy of Petoskey and John McCarthy of Grand Rapids; best friend Terry Newton of Petoskey, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Friday, December 17th, at Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey, with the Reverend Father Dennis Stillwell presiding. Visitation is at 10:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by services at 11:00.
